Hook every English word to a word you already know.

English “bright” sounds like Turkish “bir at”, a horse. So in Rooko, bright is a horse that glows so hard the villagers wear sunglasses. Every word gets a funny story like that, built on a sound-alike in your language, plus a picture.

Yelesi ve kuyruğu ışıl ışıl parlayan pembe bir at; köylüler güneş gözlüğü takmış
[BRAYT]→bir at

Köyde bir at var ve bu at gece gündüz ışıl ışıl parlıyor. Yelesi ve kuyruğu öyle güçlü ışık saçıyor ki köylüler ona bakmak için güneş gözlüğü takıyor. Herkes "Bu bir at mı, güneş mi?" diye gülüyor. İşte bu kadar parlak olana İngilizcede "bright" denir!

Example
The sun is very bright today, so wear sunglasses.
Bugün güneş çok parlak, o yüzden güneş gözlüğü tak.
meaning
parlak, aydınlık

Every English word gets a hook

Rooko is an iPhone app for learning English words. Each word comes with a hook: a short, funny story built on a word from your own language that sounds like the English one, plus a picture of that story. The sound-alike gives the new word something to hold on to.

Three hooks from the app

bright/braɪt/ · Türkçe
Sounds like “bir at”, a horse. A village horse glows day and night, so brightly that the villagers put on sunglasses to look at it. Meaning: parlak, aydınlık.
kitchen/ˈkɪtʃən/ · Azərbaycan
Sounds like “keçin”, your goat. Mum shouts “Keçin mətbəxdədir!” and there is the goat in an apron, stirring the soup. Meaning: mətbəx.
iron/ˈaɪərn/ · Русский
Sounds like “айран”. Dad irons a shirt while drinking ayran, and a white drop falls on the shirt. Meaning: утюг; железо.

Hooks are written separately for each language. A Turkish speaker and a Spanish speaker get different stories for the same English word, because the sound-alike has to come from the language you think in. Stories are available in Türkçe, Azərbaycan, Русский and Español.
